October and the Fall season are here and the days are getting shorter with each turn of the daily calendar. October starts with a new fiscal year on the first and has Halloween at the end of the month. Sandwiched in between are several events and happenings of note.

October 1 marks the starts our new fiscal year. With the renewal of the year, we all get a fresh start on training and other things in CAP. A new Safety Slam Sheet starts a clean slate for every unit. Remember reports are due by the 10th day of the following month. You may use the NC Wing Form 11 or the consolidated commander's report to report unit safety activities each month.

National Fire Prevention Week runs from October 7-13, 2007. With cooler weather approaching, now is the time to get ready for fireplace use, leaf burning, and other events that may produce a fire hazard. Refer to the link below for info:

The middle of the month will see the return of the MER Fall Safety Blitz. This event is sponsored by the Middle East Region and has been identified by the NC Wing Commander as a 100% participation event. As details of this event are released by the MER/SE, your unit Safety Officer will be supplied with the event requirements.

October 19-21 is the weekend of the NC Wing Conference in Hickory, NC. As we have done for several years past in accordance with National CAP Safety requirements, CAP will observe a Safety Down Day during this event. Speaking of the Wing Conference, the Safety Seminar at the Conference will focus on the Mission Safety Officer ES rating. If you want to begin the upgrade for your CAPF 101 card, bring a signed SQTR or pick one up at the seminar. We will be breaking the requirements down and discussing the role and responsibilities of the MSO.

Halloween comes on the last of the month and, as always, be careful out there. There are numerous safety tips to be found concerning this holiday at these websites:

For the pilots this month, we have to be aware of the loss of daylight and be prepared to sharpen out night flying skills. North Carolina has military installation scattered all about the state and many of these have aviation components that may be sharing airspace with us in daylight and darkness. Use this online education program to learn how to deal with military lights-out training, an operation now being conducted in select military operations areas (MOAs) across the country. This program reviews key facts about special use airspace and helps you understand lights-out training,

There is an informative quiz provided by Sporty's Pilot Shop concerning night flying. See how much you know about the rules and regs concerning night flight.

Well, that's about it for October. Everyone have a safe month. See you in Hickory!
Don't do nothing stupid.
