NORTH CAROLINA – They came from Belgium, Canada and Germany, and they got a taste of life in the South this summer when local U.S. Civil Air Patrol units hosted, toasted and roasted four International Air Cadet Exchange members and their adult escort.

For cadets Louis-Phillippe Valiquette and Tamara Baillie of Canada and Hans Hooyberghs and Jolien Daeninck of Belgium, along with host Michael Van Put from Germany, the odyssey began near the Outer Banks of North Carolina with swimming and a beach picnic at Elizabeth City. The next morning began with breakfast at the local U.S. Coast Guard base, followed by a tour of the base facilities. Next came an orientation flight in a C-130 aircraft.

Capt. Jim Elliott, commander of the Elizabeth City Composite Squadron, served as the local host and tour guide. The weekend also included a trip to Kitty Hawk and the birthplace of aviation.

Next stop was the Cherry Point U.S. Marine Corps Air Station, where the cadets experienced flying the C-130J simulator, which they dubbed "awesome." The Cunningham Field Composite Squadron's commander, Capt. Linwood Dabney, then gave the cadets a taste of home cooking with Southern-fried chicken and barbecue at the squadron headquarters.

The following day it was off to Raleigh, where Maj. Al Therriault, deputy commander for cadets for the Raleigh-Wake Composite Squadron, served as host. Activities included a trip to Silver Lake Water Park, hosted by Lt. Col. J. Jay Langley of Middle East Region Headquarters and his wife, Capt. Tracie Langley.

The cadets also visited the North Carolina seat of government in Raleigh, traveled to the Museum of Natural History and toured the North Carolina Air National Guard Base at Raleigh-Durham International Airport.

The last leg of the North Carolina visit began with a flight aboard two CAP aircraft from Raleigh. The South Piedmont Senior Squadron's commander, 1st Lt. John Reynolds, said that while the cadets were all glider pilots, he and 1st Lt. John May gave them their first powered flight in piston aircraft. After the flight to Concord, the team visited Concorde Mills Outlet Mall.

Lt. Col. Lucy Davis of the North Carolina Wing and her daughter, Sr. Mbr. Kathy Gaddy, wing administrator, introduced the cadets to Carowinds Park in Charlotte on the final day of their visit, capping a whirlwind tour for some very exceptional young men and women.

At each stop along the way host families provided meals and sleeping accommodations, while Lt. Cols. Davis and Linwood Barkley of the Tar River Composite Squadron provided ground transportation in a CAP van throughout the week.

Cadets Louis-Phillippe Valiquette and Tamara Baillie came from Canada and Hans Hooyberghs and Jolien Daeninck from Belgium, and host Michael Van Put from Germany.
