The following was received from the PAO LISTSERV. Maybe it will help in recruitment.
A few years ago, as the PAO for our Squadron (Aurora Composite), I did an exercise for the cadets asking them what they would say if someone asked them why they joined CAP. Here they are cut and pasted. Maybe something might help.
" I joined CAP because Boy Scouts wasn't enough for me. I wanted more "real" experiences that would help me in my military career"
" I always wanted to be in the military, ever since I was little. Someone suggested that I find out what it is really like before I sign my life away, so I joined CAP. It was a lot harder than I thought it was going to be, but I have stuck with it and now I think the real military will be a lot easier. I want to do it more than ever now."
"I joined CAP because I wanted to fly and learn everything I could about airplanes. But what I learned is that there is a lot more to CAP than just airplanes. I have become a lot more disciplined (my mom likes that), better at following through with jobs (my teachers like that) and more focussed on my career goals (my dad likes that). So I guess we are all happy now (but don't tell them that I know that), thanks to CAP.
"I remember watching a parade in Molalla and these guys carrying the American Flag. When they went by and they got real close, I realized they weren't any older than I was. I told my dad. "I want to do that" He took me the next week.
"I am not athletic, like football, basketball and stuff like that. I don't really want to do music or art and I couldn't find something I wanted to do that wasn't like for geeks, like chess club or computer club. My counselor told me I should think about CAP. The first time I went, I was scared. I didn't want to be yelled at, but after talking to some of the cadets and meeting the flight sargeant(sic) who explained why they do some of things they do, like drill, PT and stuff, I really, really wanted to do it. So I did!
"My grandpa was in Vietnam, but my dad wasn't in the military. I love my grandpa and I want to be like him, CAP gave me the chance to get a good start."
"Someone told me that I would do better at the Air Force Academy if I joined CAP. I have always wanted to go there, so it made sense that I would do something to help me get there."
"I got in trouble at school and my parents made me join CAP or they were going to send me to a miltary school. That scared me. I don't like it here much, but I know it is good for me and I am learning cool stuff. " |
